Singapore, Apr 16: Two more people died of the SARS virus in Singapore, raising the death toll in the city-state to 12 since the outbreak last month, a health ministry spokeswoman said today. Two other deaths were being investigated here if they are related to SARS, a pneumonia-like virus which has claimed the lives of more than 150 people worldwide, with more than 3,500 probable or suspected cases.
Singapore has the fourth highest death toll in the world behind China, Hong Kong and Canada. It is also among a list of the most affected areas listed by the World Health Organisation which includes Vietnam and Taiwan. In its latest bulletin issued late Monday, the ministry of health said there were four more additional SARS cases, raising the total number of cases to 162, with 64 still in hospital, 18 of them in intensive care.

Eighty-five patients have recovered, showing that SARS is not universally fatal despite the absence of a treatment. Bureau Report
