United Nations, Sept 24: France today hit out at the United States for going to war in Iraq without the United Nations' approval and suggested transfer of political and administrative powers to Iraqis under the guidance of the world body. "In an open world, no one can be isolated, no one can act alone in everyone's name and no one can accept the anarchy of a lawless society," French President Jacques Chirac told the UN General Assembly here.
He asserted the United States' embarking on war in Iraq without the UN Security Council approval had undermined multilateralism.
Chirac, who spearheaded the international outcry against the US-led conflict in Iraq, stressed the need for expeditious handing over of sovereignty and governance responsibilities to Iraqis according to a "realistic timetable under the UN guidance".
"This," he said, "is indispensable to stability and reconstruction" in war-ravaged Iraq.
