Paris, June 08: The committee which runs the grand slam tennis tournaments yesterday said the four events – the Australian Open, the French Open, Wimbledon and the US Open - opposed calls to make extra prize money available for competitors.
All four tournaments are free to set their own level of prize money - and Wimbledon has often caused a ripple of discontent by maintaining higher remuneration for the men than the women. But player representatives have been hoping to obtain a larger slice of the cake.
The slams historically make healthy profits whereas the future of some tour events has been in doubt since the recent collapse of multimillion-dollar sports marketing firm ISL.
The slams justify adhering to current levels of prize money allocation, insisting they already plough large chunks of their profits back into the grassroots game.
An ATP tour spokesman refused to comment.
