Many people are successful, but few are successful leaders. So what does it take to make a hot-shot CEO? Or a perfect company president? The ongoing Leadership Summit 2002, being organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry in Delhi, threw up some answers. Infosys Technologies Ltd chairman and mentor (that’s the term Mr Murthy prefers over founder!) N R Narayana Murthy said that it was very important for a leader to walk his talk. A corporate leader in particular must deliver on his promises, he said. According to him, a leader should not use the resources of his company for personal benefit. Equitable salaries were also an important part of corporate governance, he said, the right salary for a CEO should not be 15 times more than the lowest paid in his company. Mr Murthy added that a corporate leader should have a strong community orientation, for “if we look for the public good, the private good will follow”.
