Chennai, Aug 29: AIADMK general secretary and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa is likely to be re-elected to the party post when the party election takes place on September 10. Jayalalithaa has appointed party presidium chairman and finance minister, C Ponnaiyan, as commissioner for holding the polls, results of which would be declared on the same day.

Jayalalithaa, was elected as the general secretary of AIADMK in 1988, soon after the death of AIADMK founder M G Ramachandran. The party suffered a split then with the widow of Ramachandran, Janaki, heading one faction and Jayalalithaa another. Both the factions merged after the 1989 elections to the state assembly, in which DMK defeated both the factions.
She had been re-elected as the general secretary in 1993 and 1998.

Under the AIADMK constitution, all the primary members of the party are to elect the general secretary.
After the election for general secretary's post on Sept 10, elections to other fora in the party would be held in stages.
