New Delhi, May 12: Mobile phone service in Jammu and Kashmir continues to remain a distant dream as fresh concerns have been raised by security agencies about making this technology available in the restive state.
Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mufti Mohammed Sayeed today met Union IT and Communications Minister Arun Shourie and discussed the issue of providing mobile telephony in the state.
After a 20-minute long meeting, Shourie admitted that security agencies had raised some concerns about providing the technology to the state.
"There have been some concerns raised by security agencies, which to me, seem to be legitimate," Shourie said and added "no one should make it a prestige issue."
He said that talks were being held with defence and home ministries on the issue.
However, Shourie refused to give any date for commencing the service saying, "I don't believe in giving a definite time-frame."
His predecessor Pramod Mahajan had announced earlier this year that mobile telephony would be started in the state by April 13 this year.
Among other issues discussed by the chief minister were holding of an it conference in the state which has been agreed to and was expected to be held in the last week of June.
Sayeed also asked for speedy implementation of Internet technology at block levels for which Rs 45 crore had been sanctioned. Shourie told him that the plan was in the last stage, official sources said.
