Beijing, Apr 23: Milk beer, a new beverage, is now being produced in Hebei Province making China the third country after the United States and Japan to have acquired the production technology, a report said today. Prepared from fresh milk after fermenting it twice, the frothy beverage, introduced by the Tianjin Food Science Research Institute, is a cross between milk and beer.
"The beverage has the merits of beer and milk," Professor Chen Shusheng of the institute said. The low alcohol and proper carbon dioxide content makes it rather nutritious and it is easily absorbed by the human body, Xinhua news agency quoted Chen as saying.
As drinking it regularly can boost blood circulation, quench thirst and help people relax, milk beer has already won the reputation as "milk champagne" in developed countries. After being put into trial production late last year in China, the beverage has gained broad recognition in a dozen cities around China including Beijing and Shanghai.
In the southern city of Guangzhou alone, the share of milk beer in the beverage market has reached around 60 per cent and continues to rise. Bureau Report
