Bangalore, Aug 15: Karnataka government today decided to issue a new seat matrix and order re-counselling for admission of students into professional courses during this academic year to implement the 50:50 seat sharing formula awarded by the Supreme Court. The government perused the apex court judgement delivered yesterday on the contentious issue of seat sharing at an high level emergent meeting convened here by Chief Minister S M Krishna and attended by higher education minister Dr G Parameshwara, Home Minister Mallikarjun Kharge and top officials.

Briefing the press after the meeting, Parameshwara said the Supreme Court verdict had answered several questions that haunted the government and it had armed the government with more powers. Parameshwara who did not set any time frame for drawing up of new seat matrix, however, said "it would be done as soon as possible".

He said the anticipation of the government was that the on-going counselling process being done on the basis of sharing seats in the ratio of 75:25 would have to be completed by September end and the new schedule may stretch upto October middle.

Parameshwara said the government would also set up two committees headed by retired high court judges to go into the issue of regulating admissions and fixing of new fee structure on the basis of cost incurred by each colleges. Bureau Report
