Indore, Aug 09: As the issue of imposition of community fine rocked the just concluded Madhya Pradesh Assembly, Chief Minister Digvijay Singh today said that the state government would go up to the supreme court on the issue if people challenge the decision in courts.
Talking to reporters here, Singh justified the decision by saying that it was based on the law enacted by the then BJP government headed by Sunderlal Patwa.
Reacting to the allegation that his government has divided the communities on caste and religious lines, Singh said that people indulging in violence would not be spared irrespective of their caste and religion.
He clarified that the law empowers the state government to impose such fine by identifying groups or sub-groups indulging in such disturbances.
The state government has recently imposed community fines on some members of upper caste for allegedly damaging property of Dalits in Rajgarh and on those indulging in violence at Dhar demanding reopening of Bhojshala.
