Delhi, Nov 11: The Knitwear Design department of NIFT is all set to rock the gala, Spectrum, at the institute with ensembles inspired from the nature.
“Forest is the inspiration behind these creations that reflect the mood of a couture collection,” says Monimala Bhattacharya, a student. The students have created a collection of 20 garments, to be showcased on the first day of Spectrum (Nov. 12). While autumn and winter are the seasons most students have taken inspiration from, few have created collections using spring as a theme.
Says Seema Muralidharan: “I’ve used peacock feathers for my garment that essentially brings out the festive mood in a forest.” While she has focused on royal blues and greens in her ensembles, most students have worked with rust, beige, brown and dashes of green and blue. A women’s wear range comprising skirts, blouses and tops will be displayed, besides trousers, shirts and wraparounds for men.
"Although our course caters to the technological aspect of design, we’re trying to work on fashion with this range,” says Prachi Sharma. The students normally knit their fabric that is later crafted onto garments. This year was an exception as the batch is working on surface ornamentation of the garment. “I’ve tried to create the effect of a bark of a tree in my clothes,” says Monimala. So while the students are working hard to complete this collection for D-day, there brews a common complaint. “This collection although for the Spectrum, has been financed by us,” says a student. “This is the first time our department will be showcasing our creations at Spectrum and it was quite a battle convincing our management to grant permission.” Another reason for this batch to be disillusioned is the fact that NIFT is no longer offering scholarships or sending students on exchange programmes. So while NIFT is working on creating a healthy working environment and overall personality development of students, the management should also consider catering to other needs of students.
