New Delhi, Jul 22: The Centre has called an urgent meeting on July 24 of agriculture and relief ministers of 11 states which are likely to be affected by the long dry spell to take stock of contingency arrangements. Representatives of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu would take part in the meeting, an official statement said here today.

It said the Centre will implement certain measures to counter the likely drought situation arising due to the failure of monsoon in certain states.

"The central government has identified certain action points which would be acted upon after consultation with the state governments to effectively deal with the situation," it added. These action points relate to the review of the status of public distribution system in the affected states as well as arrangements for quick movement of foodgrains to the affected places.

The measures will also include setting up of the fodder information centres within the central animal husbandry department and issuing guidelines about maintenance of cattle camps, updating of the health contingency plan and conveying it to the states.
