Mohanpur (WB), Aug 10: Many state-owned fisheries in West Bengal were using new scientific fish hormone for induced breeding to yield high hatching figures as the traditional method for controlled spawning in fishes does have its shortcomings, participants at a seminar on 'fish breeding' said here.

The hormone Wova - FH by a domestic pharmaceutical major was ideal for high fertilisation with single dose easy administration, Sandip Ahir Rao of the pharma company said at the seminar here, in Nadia district, yesterday. Experts like C Saha, former professor of West Bengal university of animal and fishery sciences, director of Barrackpore fishery Utpal Bhowmik while dwelling on the necessity to use such hormones requested the pharma major to sustain the production of the hormone and bring down its price for the sake of widespread use. The hormone was now being used in some fisheries in Andhra Pradesh and Orissa besides West Bengal, he said.
Citing the shortcomings of the traditional method in fish breedings, the experts said in the conventional ways of spawning the probability of success was not very high, as the handling and post-breeding strain may lead to the death of the fish. Also there was the problem of storage and transportation. One of the hatchery owners, who tested the new hormone product, said that it was good but the rate was very high. The discussion was organised by aqua culture and fisheries development board along with pharma major Wockhardt.
