Kolkata, June 25: Though everyone recognises the contribution of Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Devdas' in globalising Indian cinema, few remember that the very first cinematic version of Sarat Chandra Chatterjee's famed novel by director-actor Pramathesh Barua was an unrivalled phenomenon in the history of the industry. To celebrate the birth centenary of Indian cinema's first blockbuster hero Pramathesh Barua and tea planter-turned-doyen of Assamese film industry Jyoti Prasad Agarwalla, the Assam State Film (Finance and Development) Corporation Limited would organise a three-day festival here beginning June 27.
'Satabarsha', a festival of films and photo exhibition, to be jointly organised by the directorate of film festival of West Bengal government's film complex Nandan, would screen Barua's acclaimed film 'Mukti' as the inaugural movie.
Another acclaimed son of the soil music director and singer Bhupen Hazarika would pay his tributes to Agarwalla, who made the first Assamese film 'Joymoti'.
Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi and Kolkata mayor Subrata Mukherjee would participate in the inaugural function where Dr Birendranath Dutta, celebrated Assamese scholar and president of Asom Sahitya Sabha, would speak on Assamese cinema.

The package of five films include 'Agnisnan' by Dr Babendra Nath Saikia, 'Patni' by Pulak Gogoi and 'Xagoroloi bohudur' by Jahnu Barua, sources said. Bureau Report
