Fierce storms have killed at least 44 people within about 24 hours in Algeria, including 34 in the capital Algiers, emergency services reported on Saturday issuing a new toll.
Officials stressed that the casualty figures were provisional ones.
Earlier, the emergency services had said that eight people had died and more than a dozen were injured in driving rainstorms which have pelted the northern part of the country since Friday.
Algiers itself was practically paralyzed on Saturday morning, because the storms had caused power blackouts and flooded numerous districts, making driving almost impossible.
