Guwahati, July 18: The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement as the Brahmaputra and its tributaries recorded a receding trend.
With cessation of rain in the catchment areas, the rivers were flowing with a receding trend, although vast tracts of land were still under water.
According to official sources, situation, however, continued to remain grim in Dhemaji district as the administration was gearing up for a massive post-flood operation to provide succour to the victims. In lower Assam also the situation was improving, although thousand of inmates were still in the camps and yet to return to their homes.
It would take a couple of days for the water to start clearing from the low-lying areas, the sources said. According to the meteorology office here there would be negligible rain in the next 24 hours as the monsoon was shifting southwards.
Nearly 40 lakh people of 22 districts have been affected in the current wave of floods which have claimed 24 lives. Bureau Report
