Dallas, Apr 25: Less than one minute into the fifth overtime, Petr Sykora finally beat Dallas Stars netminder Marty Turco with the game-winning goal to lift the Anaheim Mighty Ducks to a 4-3 victory and a 1-0 series lead in their best-of-seven Western Conference semifinal.
Sykora's goal 55 seconds into the fifth overtime period maintained the Mighty Ducks improbable playoff run. It was the fourth longest game in the NHL's long history, stretching nearly six hours. Game two will be in Dallas on Saturday. Steve Rucchin appeared to have won it for Anaheim in the third overtime but the net was ruled to have been off its moorings as the puck crossed the goal line. After a stunning sweep of the defending Stanley Cup champion Detroit Red Wings in the opening playoff round, the Ducks were never led by the Stars, the 1999 Cup winners. They went up 1-0 with a Jason Krog's goal midway through the first period, in which they outshot the Stars 10-4.

After Derian Hatcher tied the game 1-1 late in the opening period, Anaheim led 3-1 with second-period goals by Rob Niedermayer and Rucchin.

But Jason Arnott's goal late in the second brought Dallas close and then Brenden Morrow found the mark with just 2:47 to play to force overtime.

The Stars had the majority of shots in extra time - 40 to 27 - but could not put another past Ducks netminder Jean-Sebastien Giguere, the hero of these playoffs.
