Moscow, Nov 12: Describing the coalition politics in India as an indicator of the ''level of maturity'' of its democratic traditions, Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee has said that governance by coalition is particularly suited for Indian conditions.
"I believe that governance by coalition is particularly suited for Indian conditions since it enables better sensitivity to all shades of sectoral and regional interests,'' Vajpayee said in an interview to a Russian daily published today.
He said the fact that the current coalition had stayed intact for more than five years, was a tribute to its constituent parties.
''It is an indicator of what all is possible when politicians decide to come together for larger interests of the country,'' he said.
He said an all-party consensus prevailed in India on the need to develop stable and strong relations with Russia.
''I do not think there is any other country for which there is such a ground swell of popular goodwill and such a broad spectrum of support in India,'' he added.
Pointing out that parliamentary democracy in India had sustained despite many challenges and scpeticism, Vajpayee said India had preserved the multi-ethnic, multi-cultural and multi-religious fabric of its society within a democratic federal framework.
''The magnitude of this achievement is sometime not fully appreciated...We have proved the sceptics wrong,'' he added. Bureau Report
