New Delhi, July 24: European Union's decision to extend duty and quota free access to Pakistan's textiles from January this year has adversely affected India's apparel exports, particularly items like T-shirts and pullovers whose exports have dipped by over 70 per cent.

Exports of t-shirts to EU during the first four months of the calendar year has declined by a whopping 68.28 per cent in terms of quantity while that of pullovers has come down by 81.75 per cent, as per data compiled by the Apparel Export Promotion Council here. Similarly, exports of gents shirts in terms of quantity had also declined by almost 30 per cent.

In addition to a decline in the quantity, there has also been a sharp fall in the unit value realisation of certain items such as ladies dresses, ladies blouses and gents shirts.

Average unit value realisation of ladies dresses declined to 3.96 Euro per piece during January-April 2002 as compared to 8.40 Euro in 2001, a decline of 52.86 per cent. Similarly, unit value realisation of gents shirts has come down to an average 3.57 Euro per piece in January-April 2002 from 4.43 Euro last year, registering a decline of almost 20 per cent.

According to APEC officials, exports have been mostly hit in fast moving categories in which India not only utilises the entire quota but often surrenders quota from other categories in order to obtain more of the fast moving categories. This data compiled by AEPC was submitted by India to EU to support its case for compensation to the tune of around 250 million Euro on account of trade diversion to Pakistan.
