`We initiated what the government should have done`
By Ratan Katyayani
Even five decades after the Independence, the common village folk do not possess fundamental freedom. No policies have been made or implemented for the dalits and the tribals of the country. We, at Muktidhara, work against the government’s gargantuan projects that displace thousands of villagers. We work for their rehabilitation. In Rajasthan, gypsies and other tribals do not have fundamental rights even so many years after Independence. In the Aravalli mountains, Muktuidhara has worked for their rehabilitation. The work is now limited to just four districts. This initiative has been started by an NGO whereas it should have been initiated by the govt. This effort has inspired rootless people around these districts to come and settle here. We have done the work of rehabilitation but other problems like unemployment, education and health are still as they were. Independence, for these tribals, can only be successful if they are liberated from these problems. Independence for them is only possible if they get all their rights. The author is the founder of Muktidhara Sansthan and has been working for the rights of gypsies and nomadic people of Rajasthan
