India, involved in a tense standoff with Pakistan on its western border, has imposed an overnight curfew along its northeastern border with Bangladesh to cut off separatist rebels, officials said on Monday. "A curfew has been ordered along the border with Bangladesh within 500 metres on the Indian side...to prevent militants crossing the border with arms and ammunition," L. Roy, deputy commissioner of the East Khasi Hills district in the mountainous state of Meghalaya, said.
He said rebels fighting Indian rule in the remote northeast of the country were smuggling weapons across the border at night, adding security forces were on maximum alert.

India says separatist rebels operate from the neighbouring countries of Bhutan, Bangladesh and Myanmar. Bangladesh, which shares a 4,000 km (2,500 mile) border with India, says there are no guerrilla camps in its territory. Bureau Report
