Seoul, May 29: North Korea, taking a new tack in the nuclear crisis, has insisted that South Koreans should take pride in the Stalinist state's development of a "powerful deterrent force" in defiance of the United States. Casting itself as the fraternal protector of its southern neighbour, the Stalinist regime said South Korea owed its very survival to the North's drive for deterrence.
Without that deterrent force, the United States would have already attacked North Korea and war on the Korean peninsula would have broken out 100 times, reported the country’s official news agency.
The entire peninsula, including the bustling south, would have been reduced to ashes, it said. "It was thanks to the North Korea's powerful war deterrent force that peace has so far been preserved on the Korean peninsula," it asserted.
"The best way of settling the present situation... Is to build a powerful deterrent force," the statement said. "The DPRK (North Korea) has already built such a military deterrent force. The force is not aimed to threaten and attack anyone. It is a legitimate self-defense force to protect our dear land and fellow citizens," it added. Bureau Report
