Vijayawada, Dec 06: People are literally dying to see their favourite Tollywood hero. On Friday, one person died and another was injured in the much-hyped audio release function of the NTR Junior starrer Andhrawala.
Vijayawada, Dec 06: People are literally dying to see their favourite Tollywood hero. On Friday, one person died and another was injured in the much-hyped audio release function of the NTR Junior starrer Andhrawala.
The youth, who has not yet been identified, is the latest in the series of victims who die while trying to get a glimpse of their favourite filmstars. Indeed, the actors encourage their fans to congregate, often without adequate precautions.
Naturally, jostling to get a good look at the star leads to pushing and shoving. Then there is a stampede and people get crushed, or the police lathi-charges the crowd to disperse it. All of this, far from being pathetic, is seen as a demonstration of the popularity of the star.
As part of an elaborate PR exercise, the film unit had scheduled the function at Nimmakuru village in Krishna district on Friday, where the thespian N T Rama Rao was born.
Thousands of fans, who have come on open invitation, threw sandals and pelted stones at the dais as they could not enter the crowded venue. In the stampede, an unidentified person died and while another received serious injuries. The crowd shifted the injured person to the Gudivada Government Hospital.
The organisers of the function had taken some 3,000 contest winners from across the State to Nimmakuru on three specially hired trains. The trains were operated from Visakhapatnam, Hyderabad and Tirupati to Gudivada, from where the invitees were taken in a procession to Nimmakuru. Andhrawaala hero Junior NTR, along with other film stars joined the procession from Gudivada, which took over four hours to cover the 25 km distance to the village.
But hundreds of Junior NTR’s fans from the nearby areas thronged the tiny village even before the caravan arrived. The invitees, in the event, could not enter the venue. The stampede happened when NTR Jr unveiled the statues of his NTR and Basava Tarakam.
Police had tough time in controlling the crowd, who attempted to break the barricades at every point, to reach closer to their favourite hero and the glamourous heroines.
