Beirut, July 06: Sheikh Fadlallah, a leader of the Shiite Muslim community in Lebanon, today called on Muslim clerics to issue religious decrees forbidding attacks like that which killed 48 people at a Shiite mosque in Quetta, Pakistan, on Friday. "We ask clerics from across the Muslim world to issue Fatwas forbidding, in the strongest possible terms, criminal acts such as that which targeted peaceful worshippers in Quetta," he said in a statement.

"Such acts are the result of underdevelopment, ignorance and misinformation and are exploited by forces that seek to spread discord between Shiite and Sunni Muslims," he said. Sheikh Fadlallah is a prominent member of the Shiite Muslim community and is considered close to the Iranian reformist movement. Iran condemned the attack in Quetta yesterday, describing it as a "terrorist act".

Three people, including two suicide bombers, attacked worshippers on Friday as they left the Shiite mosque in Central Quetta, favoured by Hazara Muslims, many of whom come from neighbouring Afghanistan.
