Gaza City, June 25: The radical Islamic group Hamas has dismissed US President George W Bush's Middle East policy speech as "biased" in favour of Israel and vowed to pursue its attacks against the Jewish state.
"President Bush's speech was biased in favour of Israel and ignores Palestinian rights," senior Hamas official Ismail Abu Shanab said. "There is no sign of hope in the speech and we must continue the resistance," Abu Shanab added.
Bush said yesterday that the United States would not support the creation of a Palestinian state until a new leadership "not compromised by terror" is elected, implicitly demanding Yasser Arafat's ouster. The United States and Israel have repeatedly heaped pressure on Arafat to crack down on Hamas and other militant groups responsible for devastating suicide bombings against Israeli civilians. "In his speech, Bush gave the occupation (forces) a green light to strengthen their grip and step up the killings and the destruction. This American bias does not serve the peace process and will not solve the problem, but it will further complicates matters," Abu Shanab said.
"The speech has dashed the hopes of the Palestinian authority and the Arab efforts (to push forward the peace process)," he said.
"Bush adopted the Israeli position crushing all the efforts" for peace.
"Bush has bolstered Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon's position when he said that resistance is akin to terrorism and now Sharon will step up the Palestinian bloodshed," he warned.
