Apprehending that VHP would pressurise the government to meet its demands over the Ayodhya issue, the Babri Masjid Movement Coordination Committee (BMMCC) on Friday urged Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee to examine all legal aspects in depth before making any commitment or initiating any action.
BMMCC convenor Sye Shahabuddin wrote a letter to the Prime Minister pointing out that saints mobilised by the VHP were going to meet him on Sunday and demand handing over of 40 acres of the land in Ayodhya acquired by the Government in 1993 to enable them to begin construction of Ram Temple on or before March 12.
He predicted in the letter that the VHP leaders would argue that the Supreme Court order does not stand in the way, and if the central Government agrees it can transfer the land to the VHP or Ram Janambhoomi Mandir Nyas.
"The VHP leaders may also argue that the Allahabad High Court proceeding relates only to the Babri Masjid site where the Garbha Griha will be located according to the site plan of the mandir," Shahabuddin said.
He said, "The arguments had been examined by the BMMCC in the light of the October 1994 Supreme Court judgement and found that it upholds the acquisition but in respect of the disputed land under litigation, which includes the Babri Masjid site, it appoints the Central government as its Statutory Receiver, that is its custodian till the title suit is decided."
