Hyderabad, Sept 12: Stung by criticism over shoddy investigation by CID into the fake stamp paper scam, Andhra Pradesh government has decided to set up a special investigation team (SIT) to probe the racket.
The decision to constitute SIT, to be headed by Inspector General of Police (recruitment) Krishnamraju, to exclusively deal with the case was taken at a high-level meeting chaired by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu here last night, an official release said.
However, the CID would continue to be involved in the investigations and would assist the sit.
The setting up of sit comes in the backdrop of CID's failure to file a chargesheet in the case even after four years of investigation into the fraud. The recent arrest of senior TDP legislator and former minister, C Krishna Yadav, by Maharashtra Police, in connection with the scam had taken the CID by surprise, prompting public criticism about the way it had handled the case.
Taking note of the 'loopholes' in CID probe, the chief minister had already ordered a high level inquiry to look into whether there was 'willful delay' on the part of CID or collusion with the scamsters. The inquiry is being done by senior police official Kamal Kumar, an Additional Director General of Police heading the police housing corporation. Bureau Report
