Hyderabad, Jan 02: The Election Commission (EC) has rejected the demand of opposition parties in Andhra Pradesh to extend the January 20 deadline for publication of a final list of voters to facilitate a thorough verification in view of "large-scale enrolment of bogus voters" by ruling TDP. State Chief Electoral Officer Narayan Rao conveyed the EC's decision to representatives of various political parties at an all-party meeting convened by him here today.
Rao told the meeting that 60 per cent of verification process was now over and the remaining work would be completed as per original schedule.
Emerging from the meeting, representatives of the opposition Congress G Venkat Reddy and Kesava Rao expressed unhappiness over the state election officials' response to their demand for postponement by a month the publication of final voters list.
While the state election officials said about 11 lakh bogus voters were identified during the verification process, the opposition leaders feared that the number might go up further if verification was done by convening 'gram sabhas' (village meetings).
The CEO made it clear that there would be no change in the schedule and expressed confidence that the process of revision of rolls would be completed on time.
Five opposition parties - Congress, CPI, CPI (M), TRS and MIM – will go ahead with their plan to organise a joint rally here on January 05 to protest against `large-scale enrolment of bogus voters' by TDP.
