Bogota, Aug 09: Five civilians, including two children, were burned to death by a rebel car bomb meant for a passing military patrol in oil-rich northeastern Colombia, local officials said. A two-year-old boy and a 12-year-old girl were among the victims, said Jose Sierra, mayor of Saravena, 300 kilometers northeast of Bogota, where the blast took place yesterday. Authorities blamed rebel groups operating in strife-torn Arauca province. "It was the terrorist groups that operate in Arauca," provincial police chief Luis Alcides Morales said.

"The FARC is set on killing and continuing to harass the people of saravena municipality and other parts of the province." The violence-ridden province, bordering Venezuela, is a stronghold of Colombia's two main Guerrilla groups, the National Liberation Army, or ELN, and the FARC, the revolutionary armed forces of Colombia.

Authorities announced a nighttime curfew in Saravena for the next two days and a 17,000-dollar reward for information leading to capture of the culprits.

Police had earlier announced a toll of four killed in the incident.

"The explosion of a vehicle as a military patrol passed left four people burned to death, among them two children, and three others wounded," Morales said.
