Abuja (Nigeria), May 17: Peace talks between the Liberian government and two rebel groups will take place on June 2 in Ghana, an official statement by the West African regional grouping ECOWAS said here yesterday. Nigeria`s ex-dictator general Abdulsalami Abubakar will mediate the talks between the Liberian government and the two rebel groups: the Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD) and the Movement for Democracy in Liberia (MODEL), the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) statement said.
The talks, to be held under the aegis of the international contact group on Liberia, are expected to result in a comprehensive peace process, including a lasting ceasefire, security, electoral reform, respect for human rights, the rule of law and national reconciliation, it added.


The contact group, set up last September 17 on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly session in New York is made up of the Nnited Nations, the European Union, ECOWAS, the African Union, the United States, France, Senegal, Nigeria, Ghana and Morocco.

The 15-nation ECOWAS, established in 1975 to promote economic integration and stability in the region, has is headquarters in Abuja, the Nigerian capital.
Lurd rebels rose up against the government of President Charles Taylor in 1999, two years after the former warlord was elected to power.
Last May 6, the UN Security Council renewed two-year-old UN sanctions against Liberia for a further 12 months with the aim of halting the spread of the conflict there to neighbouring countries in the volatile region.
