Mumbai, June 04: NCP activist Shivajirao Patil Kavhekar, who defeated former Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh in 1995 assembly elections, today joined BJP here.
Kavhekar along with NCP office-bearers of his native Latur district and Janata Dal activists was admitted in the BJP-fold in the presence of party national vice-president Gopinath Munde, state unit party chief Pandurang Phundkar and the leader of the opposition in state council Nitin Gadkari.
Nearly 2,500 NCP workers in Latur would be admitted in the BJP-fold soon at a public rally, which would be attended by Union ministers Sushma Swaraj and Shahnawaz Hussain, Munde told reporters.
Kavhekar said he and his colleagues were upset with the NCP forging an alliance with Congress, against whom they had fought the last assembly elections.
