Secretary of State Colin Powell met with Belgian Prime Minister Guy Verhofstadt in Washington on Wednesday.
Belgium currently holds the presidency of the European Union. Speaking with reporters outside the State Department, the two leaders said they spent most of their time talking about the situation in the Middle East.
Powell said the EU and the US are closely aligned in their positions, and united in calling on Chairman Arafat to implement the actions he called for in his speech on Sunday.
Arafat's speech on Sunday called for an end to attacks against Israel, including suicide bomb attacks, referring to them as "terrorist activity" for the first time. Verhofstadt stressed the importance of pressuring both parties and was hopeful that with EU and US co-operation they would get results. Bureau Report
