Shillong, July 27: There was no proposal to lift the ban on underground militant outfits Achik National Volunteers Council (ANVC) and Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) in Meghalaya, state Home Minister Robert G Lyngdoh said today. "Had there been any proposal, the state government must have been consulted in this regard," Lyngdoh said denying a media report that New Delhi was considering lifting of the ban on ANVC operating from Garo Hills region of the state.
The ban on the two organisations was imposed by the Centre in November 2000 and recently the Unlawful Activities (Preventive) Tribunal endorsed the proposal of extending the measure for another year on both the outfits. Lyngdoh, who would be leaving for Garo Hills tomorrow, said the main purpose of his 10-day visit would be to interact with the people at the grassroot levels and assess the law and order situation in the insurgency-infested three districts of the region.
"During my earlier trip, I went to districts. Now I am planning to go to block headquarters and meet NGOs, peace committees, village elders and others," he said. Bureau Report
