Durban, June 01: The 100th anniversary of the founding of the newspaper, 'Indian Opinion' by Mahatma Gandhi in South Africa will be celebrated during a three-day conference on media and Gandhian values here this week.
The conference, being organised by monthly 'Satyagraha'
newspaper run by Mahatma's grand-daughter Ela Gandhi, will be
held at the university of Durban-Westville from June 4 to 6
and will be attended by delegates from India and South Africa.
Ela Gandhi, a former African National Congress (ANC) MP who resigned from parliament two months ago, said South Africa's president Thabo Mbeki will be awarded 'Mahatma Gandhi Award for Peace and Reconciliation' on the concluding day.
Ten South African journalists who had played a crucial role in the struggle against apartheid will be honoured at the conference. Marimuthu Subramoney, a journalist of Indian origin, will also be honoured.
Gandhi said the conference will, among other things, discuss the sustainability of media that is independent of the state and mainstream media structures.
"The conference will also reflect on the Gandhian experience of empowerment, human rights mobilisation, peace and development through communication and whether such values may hold true in the contemporary world or be enhanced by a resilient and progressive alternative media," she said.
She said the conference will debate the conduct and content of the media in general and once again bring the spotlight on alternative media and its importance in the past, present and future.
