Srinagar, Sept 01: Army foiled a major infiltration bid by Pakistan trained militants to cross over into Jammu and Kashmir killing five of them in Nowgam sector, a defence spokesman said today. The militants were shot dead in an encounter yesterday and five AK rifles, one rifle launcher, one bag full of ammunition and 143 grenades were recovered from them, the spokesman said.
The exchange of fire took place when troops, detecting movement of militants, laid ambush in the sector, he said adding that the operation launched three days back was still continuing.
The identity of the militants, suspected to be foreign mercenaries, was being ascertained, he said. The militants were pushed into India through Khappi post, the spokesman said adding that maximum infiltration bids are made by Pakistan during this part of the year as fresh snowfall which blocks the peaks and infiltration routes was not far away.
