New Delhi, June 07: Two accused in the arms smuggling case in Gujarat were today brought here for a thorough interrogation by the CBI and intelligence agencies to unravel the entire conspiracy behind the incident even as a preliminary probe revealed that the consignment was meant for Ahmedabad.

The two -- Hari Bhai Manu Bhai Patel and Mohammed Ahmed Bhai -- were brought here from violence-ravaged Gujarat this afternoon after a designated court in the Banaskantha disrtict remanded them to CBI custody till June 17. Probe so far showed that the weapons were being smuggled into the state for creating further disturbances, the CBI sources said. They also did not rule out Pakistan's ISI trying to unleash a fresh communal flare-up in the state.

The two were arrested from Tharad in the district after 20 star marked pistols, 38 magazines and 132 rounds of ammunition, concealed in the cabin of a truck were seized. The CBI said the two accused revealed that the arms were meant for sale in certain localities in Ahmedabad, which witnessed communal clashes, leaving several dead.


The CBI said the agency, on a tip-off that some anti-national elements were trying to smuggle in arms and ammunition into the country mounted surveillance in the area and the team succeeded in seizing a truck carrying arms and ammunition on June 5. This is the second large seizure by the agency in the state. Last year, CBI seized huge quantity of arms and ammunition which being smuggled at the instance of Aftab Ansari, one of the main accused in the attack on American Center in Kolkata earlier this year.
