Bangkok, Oct 20: Japanese Prime Minister
Junichiro Koizumi and Russian President Vladimir Putin of
agreed on the need to "properly" address North Korea's
security concerns in a meeting today, a Japanese official
said.
"We need to pursue a comprehensive solution to
resolving the problem, and to realise this, there is a need
to properly address North Korea's concerns for a guarantee of
security," Koizumi told Putin, the official said.
"On that basic policy, President Putin said he agreed," he added.
US President George W Bush yesterday ruled out signing a non-aggression pact with North Korea, but said he would explore ways to satisfy Pyongyang's demands for security assurances in return for an end to its nuclear arms program.
Bush also agreed with his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao to step up efforts to resume a new round of six-nation talks on the North Korean nuclear crisis.
Japanese officials in Tokyo today welcomed the US plan to find a way of reassuring North Korea that Washington has no intention of attacking the Stalinist country.
