New Delhi, Oct 21: Tension gripped Madipur area of west Delhi today following the death of a youth after allegedly being beaten up by cops at the local police station. People of the area went on a violent rampage, injuring 10 policemen and blocking road traffic. Additional police troops were rushed to the area to control the mob, even as tear gas shells were fired at the violent mob.
An SDM-level enquiry has been initiated to look into the custodial death and five policemen have been suspended. However, Sushil’s family is demanding that the policemen be arrested immediately and charged with murder. Police authorities are awaiting the post-mortem report to frame the charges.
Sushil, 20, had been picked up by the policemen last night on charges of gambling. He was taken to the police station and allegedly beaten up there causing serious injuries, police sources said.
He was rushed to a nearby private hospital where he later died, they said.
As the news of his death in police custody spread, agitated local people blocked vehicular movement causing tension in the area.
While police sources say Sushil had been picked up only for questioning, his family and neighbours allege that the policemen beat up Sushil outside his house before taking him away, and later dropped him home in a private car in an unconscious state.
