Hyderabad, Sept 18: Uttar Pradesh government's decision not to issue a fresh notification in the Babri Masjid demolition case is set to snowball into a political battle with CPI(M) today saying it will consult other opposition parties to formulate a joint strategy to see that the accused union ministers do not go scot free. It is obvious that Mayawati has failed to uphold rule of law in her anxiety to please her coalition partner BJP and continue in power, the CPI(M) politburo member Prakash Karat told reporters here.
Dismissing as "self-serving" Mayawati's contention that there was no need for a special court to try the case, Karat said his party would approach other opposition parties and legal experts on how to pursue the matter.
Assailing the BSP-BJP coalition government for "abandoning a serious criminal case" in which three union ministers - L K Advani, Murli Manohar Joshi and Uma Bharati -are the accused, he said the issue was not just confined to Uttar Pradesh but was a matter of national concern.
All the three union ministers were chargesheeted for their direct role in the demolition. Allowing them to go scot free is a serious matter, the Marxist leader said.
Providing relief to the accused union ministers, Mayawati announced yesterday in Lucknow that there was neither a justification nor necessity for issuing a fresh notification in the case and left it to CBI to pursue it in an 'ordinary' court.
