New Delhi, Mar 12: Domestic car sales fell by 22.7 per cent in February 2003 as consumers postponed their purchases in anticipation of an excise duty reduction in the Union budget 2003-04. Total sales, fell after eight successive months of growth, to 37,446 cars from 48,444 cars in February last year, data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) showed today.
Cumulative (April 2002-February 2003) sales stood higher by a modest 5.2 per cent at 4,73,921 cars against 4,50,289 units in the year-ago period. Government had announced an eight per cent excise duty cut on passenger cars in the budget.
Trucks and buses continued their forward march posting a 40.5 per cent rise at 19,527 vehicles. Both light, medium and heavy vehicles recorded growth during the review month.
Cumulative sales in this segment jumped by 33.5 per cent to 1,69,033 vehicles. The utility-vehicle segment clocked a 16.8 per cent rise in February this year with sales of 9,444 units.
Cumulative utility vehicle sales went up by 6.7 per cent to 98,999 units.
Total two-wheeler sales increased by 8.3 per cent to 3,95,171 units with cumulative sales higher by 18.3 per cent at 45,13,495 units. Multi-purpose-vehicle sales dipped by 40 per cent to 3,473 units.
Sale of three-wheelers increased by 6.6 per cent to 18,030 units with cumulative sales up 13.6 per cent at 2,05,840 units.
