Kolkata, May 06: The situation at Kaipul in West Bengal's North 24 Parganas district, where Union minister Tapan Sikdar was allegedly attacked by CPI-M activists yesterday, was under control with police and Rapid Action Force personnel patrolling the area, a senior police official said here today. "The situation there is peaceful and under control. The police and RAF personnel would, however, continue to patrol. A police picket has also been posted in the area," Deputy Inspector General of Police Narayan Ghosh told a news agency.

Twenty-two persons have so far been arrested in connection with the incident, Ghosh said. State Home Secretary A K Deb, meanwhile, said the government would send a report of the incident to the Union home ministry,

Sources in the nursing home where Sikdar was admitted after the alleged attack said, "The minister is stable and showing signs of improvement". Sikdar was injured in the face and neck.

The Union minister's convoy was reportedly attacked when he was returning from a poll meeting at Kaipul on the city outskirts. Bureau Report
