Attempt to penetrate airbase foiled, four ultras killed
In the first ever attempt to penetrate an airbase, a four-member suicide squad of Pakistan-based Lashker-e-Toiba (LeT) outfit attacked the Quil airport at Awantipora, triggering a heavy exchange of fire that left them dead along with a jawan of Defence Security Crop (DSC) and a civilian on Monday afternoon.
Four persons including three BSF jawans and an Indian air force personnel were also injured in the 40-minute encounter at the main gate of the airbase, popularly known as technical airport, around 2.30 pm, a police spokesman said.
Quoting preliminary investigations, he said four heavily-armed LeT militants, including two foreign mercenaries identified as Abnar and Mohammad Zakaria, masquerading as police personnel travelled between Pulwama and Awantipora in a private vehicle and stopped it at the airport. Two of them got down and started firing towards the sentries and hurled grenades, the spokesman said, adding the initial burst by militants killed a dsc personnel and wounded another.
However, BSF and army along with airforce personnel acted swiftly and fired back engaging the militants in a face-to-face encounter, killing all of them, he said.
