In a significant achievement, BSF has indigenously developed and fabricated Improvised Explosive Device (IED) jammer which would be effective in preventing casualties of security forces in militancy-affected areas of the country, Director General Gurbachan Jagat said in New Delhi.
The jammer has been developed by the research and development cell of BSF's communication directorate at a low cost, he said addressing the annual operational communication conference. The jammers have already been deployed in militancy and insurgency-hit states including Jammu and Kashmir, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur and Nagaland, Jagat said, adding the results have been satisfactory.
The BSF chief said, “Appreciable efforts were also being made in the areas of electronic field stations for interception of clandestine and terrorists' radio networks.” “There are difficult times ahead,” He told the officers and personnel of his force and asked them to put in their best efforts to continue to improvise and innovate better and cost-effective communication systems for better operations and surveillance.
Kamlesh Deka, inspector general (communications) said the BSF had made comprehensive planning, procurement and provision of latest communication equipment and installed V-sat phones, inmarsat phones and e-mail connectivity, vastly improving speed and accuracy in transmission of information. Satellite phones have also been provided in snow-bound and remote areas to enable BSF personnel to communicate with their families.
