Bangalore, Sept 17: Even as the kidnap crisis involving former minister H Nagappa entered 24th day, the state cabinet today debated the issue and reiterated its resolve to secure the safe release of the abducted leader from the captivity of forest bandit Veerappan.

State Information Minister Kagodu Thimmappa told reporters here that the government was continuing its efforts to seek a negotiated end to the crisis. He, however, said the cabinet has decided to keep under wraps its strategies being planned to manage the crisis.

Thimmappa assured the family of Nagappa and people of the state not to have apprehensions about the safety of the JDU leader. He declined to say whether the government has identified any emissary to negotiate with Veerappan.

Home minister Mallikarjun Kharge said the government has not finalised its official emissary, but the matter was debated at the cabinet meeting.

Meanwhile, human rights activists, Prof Kalyani and Sugumaran, who played a key role in securing the release of Kannada film icon Rajkumar were in the city today, a day after they met Tamil activist Kollathur Mani at Bellary Jail. Mani, whom Veerappan had demanded in his second cassette to be sent as an emissary along with Tamil Nationalist Movement leader P Nedumaran, has already appealed to the brigand to release Nagappa.
