Russian cosmonauts stationed aboard the International Space Station (ISS) began a four-hour spacewalk at 1424 GMT Monday, Russian space officials said.
"The goal of the spacewalk is to bring into working condition the docking bay Pirs, which had been attached to the ISS's surface, so that spacecraft could dock to it later on," Russian mission control officials were quoted as saying by the RIA-Novosti news agency.
Vladimir Dezhurov and Mikhail Tyurin were due to install a Russian-made cargo dock, which would later be used to unload cargo craft, officials added.
The two cosmonauts will also attach more handrails to the station's surface to facilitate subsequent spacewalks.
The ISS team's captain, US astronaut Frank Calbertson, was monitoring the spacewalk and providing necessary backup, space officials said. Bureau Report
