Kolkata, Oct 27: Infantry Day was celebrated by the Army here today to commemorate the country's first infantry unit's successful fight against the Razakars in Jammu and Kashmir in 1948. Wreaths were laid at Fort William, the Eastern Command headquarters, by Lt Gen J R Mukherjee and Major General (Retd) K K Ganguly, the seniormost retired officer in Kolkata. On this day in 1948, the first infantry unit landed in Kashmir and successfully repulsed the razakars from the vicinity of Srinagar airfield, the first glorious infantry action fought by the Army after independence.
