New Delhi, Nov 17: Nearly 500 aspirants, including two BJP rebels who opposed Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee's nephew, today pulled out of fray as the withdrawal of nominations closed leaving 5,871 candidates in the field for assembly polls in Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi. The highest number of candidates left in the field are 2,455 in Madhya Pradesh, followed by 1,753 in Rajasthan, 848 in Chhattisgarh and 815 in Delhi.
The largest number of 240 withdrawals took place in Rajasthan which included five BJP dissidents.
Over 65 candidates, including two BJP rebels, withdrew their nominations in Madhya Pradesh. There were 2,523 nominees in fray for the 230 assembly seats after scrutiny of papers and rejection of 567 of them.
BJP rebels Shram Bihari Mishra and Prabhakar Narayan Kelkar, who had filed their nominations against Vajpayee's nephew Anup Mishra from Lashkar (East) seat in Gwalior, pulled out of the race heeding to advice by central party leaders.
However, several other rebel aspirants from different political parties are still in contention either as independent candidates or nominees of other parties.
Angry over refusal of party ticket, former state minister and Dindori district Congress president Basauri Singh Masram is contesting from Bajag constituency as an independent.
