Kurnool, Dec 21: In a major rail mishap, at least 19 passengers were feared killed when Bangalore Express from Hyderabad derailed in Kurnool district of Andhra Pradesh today early morning.
Nine bogies of the Express train, which had left Hyderabad on Friday evening, derailed near Ramalingayapalli village between Pagidirai and Pendekallu stations, about 90 km from here, police said.
Heavy casuality is feared as some of the bogies of the speeding train had over-turned, police added.
District superintendent of police and senior railway officials have rushed to the spot.
The rear side bogies of the train, including an AC coach jumped off the rails. Police said the mishap occurred at around 1.15 am (IST). Most of the passengers were fast asleep when the tragedy struck.
Medical teams have rushed from Gooty railway station about 15 km from the accident site.
The train No 7685 Bangalore Express had left Kachiguda station in Hyderabad at 7 pm (IST) on Friday.
Six bodies have been retrieved from one of the overturned bogies, police said. The state Technical Education Minister N Anjaneyulu, who was travelling in the train, is safe.
Joint police teams of Kurnool and Anantapur districts were engaged in rescue operations.
