Kathmandu, Sept 16: Nepal today ruled out an
immediate resumption of talks with Maoist rebels as police
filed murder charges against the guerrilla leadership over
the assassination of a top police official.
Government spokesman Kamal Thapa put aside speculation
on both sides that talks could resume soon, demanding the
Maoists first put an end to violence that has surged since the
rebels ended a seven-month truce on August 27.
"There is no immediate possibility of peace dialogues
with the Maoists because of their unilateral withdrawal from
the ceasefire three weeks ago," said Thapa, who is the
Information Minister.
"The Maoists should now assure the public and the
international community that they will not indulge in
terrorism and kill innocent civilians.
"Until they make such an assurance, there is no question of holding talks with them," Thapa told reporters.
