Stanford (USA), July 23: Eighth-seeded Nadia Petrova, the only seeded player in action, was bounced in the first round of the 565,000-dollar WTA hardcourt tennis tournament here. Venezuelan qualifier Maria Vento-Kabchi stunned Petrova, 6-1 7-6 (7/4) for the second time yesterday. Vento-kabchi also prevailed at the 1999 Italian Open.
In the only night match, unseeded Alexandra Stevenson rallied for a 6-7 (5/7) 6-3 6-1 victory over fellow American Teryn ashley.
The 22-year-old Stevenson is still looking for her first career title. Her best outing this year was when she reached the semi-finals at Scottsdale. In other day matches, Francesca Schiavone of Italy rolled to a 6-3 6-1 victory over American Jill Craybas, Marie Gaianeh Mikaelian of Switzerland crushed lucky loser Julia Vakulenko of Ukraine 6-1 6-2. Russian qualifier Alina Jidkova coasted to a 6-1 6-4 victory over American Sarah Taylor and wildcard Amber Lui prevailed against fellow American Tara Snyder 2-6 6-3 6-2.

Jennifer Capriati is the third seed and playing her first tournament since a three-set loss to eventual winner Serena Williams in the quarter-finals of Wimbledon. She has not won a title since claiming the 2002 Australian Open crown.

Capriati took Williams' spot at the top of the draw when the top-seeded American withdrew complaining of a sore left knee. Capriati will face France's Marion Bartoli after receiving a first-round bye.
