Udhagamandalam, Jan 04: The Nilgiris district has broken a world record, with volunteers having planted 42,182 saplings within a 24-hour period, a feat recognised by the Guinness Book of World Records.

Members of the Nilgiris Wildlife Association, army volunteers from the Madras Regimental Centre, Wellington, tribals from the Mudumalai Wildlife Sanctuary and the STF from thengumudhra undertook the task, which was held in commemmoration of the international year of the mountains, former district collector, Supriya Sahu, said.
The volunteers started planting the saplings at 5.00 pm on June 23 last year and completed it the next day. In the process, they beat the record of 34,083 saplings planted by staff, students and volunteers of the fultonvale elementary junior high school at Alberta in Canada. Only native (Shola) species were planted in pits, which were of a particular size, as per the rules of the world authority, she said.


A certificate, in the name of "the district administration and the people of Nilgiris,” sent recently from London by the Guinness authorities, was formally handed over to the collector, K Sellamuth by Geetha Srinivasan, vice-president of the Nilgiris Wildlife and Environment Association (NWLEA) here today.
